Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate mother’s and mothering figures. Some countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day at different times of the year. It’s a time to honor and show appreciation for those special icons in our lives. Most of us will send flowers from a florist or simply pick up a pre-made bunch at the local store but making your own bouquet, is not only fun but sending love from your heart. The month of May yields some beautiful and extraoridinary flowers, and chosing your loved one’s favorite flower will make this day extra special. Here are some of the flowers available.
Tulips are one of my favorite flowers, they signify spring and look so beautiful. Normally planged 6-8 weeks before the winter. Then in the spring, voila! A carpet of color and joy and tulips hold beauty all on their own.
Most people think that tulips originated in the Netherlands with how iconic they are over there. But, they actually came from Central Asia where they grew as a wildflower. And they were first cultivated in Turkey around 1000AD. The tulip name actually comes from the Turkish word for ‘turban’ for their similar appearances.
Tulips were brought over to Europe in the 16th century by a biologist called Carolus Clusius. And by the 17th century, the popularity of tulips soared. Europeans just couldn’t get enough of the delightful blooms! The Netherlands loved tulips so much a phenomenon named ‘the tulip mania’ came in and caused the price of the flowers to skyrocket, crashing the markets. (click below)
Roses… aahh.. the most versatile and traditional flower that comes in many colors and signifies so many things. Also known as ‘The Queen of Flowers’, roses were thought to have originated in Asia about five thousand years ago. The rose was cultivated and grown in the Imperial Gardens of the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. The Emperors and their consorts would relax and find peace in gardens full of roses. As well as flower arrangements we add roses to perfumes, wines and medicine. The rose signifies beauty, perfection and of course love. Roses mix very well with many different flowers.
Carnations are another very versatile flower that is beautiful to look at, easy to purchase and inexpensive. The Greek’s describe the carnation as ‘the flower of the Gods’. Carnations also come in multiple colors and grades, depending on how it is cultivated. There are shows around the world that focus on the growing the most perfect carnation. Carnations represent love, fascination and distinction. These can also be mixed with many flowers and are popular in wedding bouquets.
